Success Story: Town of Whitestown 2022 Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion
The Town of Whitestown, Indiana’s wastewater treatment plan underwent a comprehensive expansion in 2022. Constructed in 2015, the original plant was permitted for 1.7 MGD of treatment capacity, however, town staff raised concerns over increasing average daily flow and waste strength that was quickly approaching the permitted capacity limit. Expansion was needed to keep up with the Town's growing demand.
In partnership with ms consultants, a scope was laid out to rehabilitate three existing Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) treatment basins and build one new basin, as well as upgrade the SBR treatment system with the goal of providing treatment for higher strength domestic waste than what the plant was originally built to receive. Additional scope items included increased capacity for aerated sludge holding basins and sludge processing facilities.
The Town of Whitestown hired our team to provide Construction Administration & Inspection services for the project. Our primary responsibility was to act as an Owners Representative on behalf of the Town. This entailed site visits to ensure rehabilitation and construction was taking place per the design specifications outlined by ms consultants, as well as reporting, and advocacy throughout the lifespan of the project. Operational support was also provided by our team, with a heavy emphasis on technical advisory. This looked like proctoring temporary process components during planned outages while specific treatment processes were phased out and replaced with new processes that were phased in.
The result was a beautifully designed and upgraded facility that could meet the accelerated needs of the surrounding Whitestown community.
