SCADA & Controls for Municipalities
Time is often the biggest commodity for a water treatment operator, which is why having the right control systems in place matters. Our team of engineers designs SCADA & Controls systems with the latest technology in mind, customized to your water or wastewater treatment plant’s unique needs.
Control Panels
Control Panels are the “mission control” of every water and wastewater treatment facility, arguably the most crucial element of your operation. These tech hubs marry together hardware and software in centralized systems that allow for continuous monitoring and control of facility operations.
We design and engineer Control Panels to achieve the following:
Pump Controls (VFDs or Starters)
Blower Controls
Filtration Controls
Chemical Dosing
Chemical Unloading
Level Control
Remote Telemetry Units (RTUs)
Gas Monitoring
Tank/Pressure Level Monitoring
Generator Monitoring
Additionally, we have the ability to custom-fabricate control panels through our partnerships with UL panel shops and can PE-stamp any drawing.
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Operator Interface Terminal (OIT) and SCADA Programming, Troubleshooting and Design
We are well-versed in the latest PLC, OIT, and SCADA programming technology. Working in tandem with clients, we guide them in selecting the best systems, control screens, automation tools, and other software & hardware devices to satisfy your treatment facility’s needs.
These include, but are not limited to:
Allen Bradley/AB
Schneider/Modicon
Siemens
Inductive Automation
Operational Technology Network Design, Review and Auditing
If your water or wastewater treatment facility is living its best (i.e. most effective) life, you have an Operational Technology Network to thank.
At its core, Operational Technology Network design is the tapestry of physical and technological elements woven together to produce highly attuned, functional facilities. What are the components of a thriving Operational Technology Network?
We’re glad you asked.
When designing these intricate networks, we take the following into consideration:
Controls
Firewalls
Network Segmentation
Zone and Conduit Models
Secure Remote Access
Continuous Monitoring
Process Instrumentation
Think of Process Instrumentation as the watchdogs of modern day water and wastewater treatment systems. When operating “in concerto”, this makeup of sensors, monitors, and controls constantly monitor your treatment facility’s flow rate, water quality, tank storage, transmitters, gauges, and other systems to ensure they’re operating as they should.
We work with municipalities to design and review Process Instrumentation so your facility can be equipped with the most advanced and effective instrumentation needed to keep your operations safe and compliant.
We consider the following when designing Process Instrumentation:
Level Sensors
Flow Sensors
Chemical Sensors
Analytical Sensors
Pressure Instruments
Classified Space Monitoring (C1D1, C1D2)
Your treatment plant’s network of piping matters more than you might think, and it starts with Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID). This service entails the highly intentional design, review and auditing of piping networks to map out how your piping system best weaves together to create water output that is clean and safe to discharge back to the environment. Our P&ID design utilizes Process Flow Diagrams and Hydraulic Calculations, marrying engineering with the latest water resources tech to keep your treatment facility running in tip-top shape.
Factors that influence P&ID design include:
Water Treatment vs. Wastewater Treatment
Fluid Type Being Transferred (Water, Chemicals, Sludge, etc.)
Pipe Sizing & Material
Valves & Fittings
Instrumentation
Control Panels
Safety & Emergency Processes and Systems
Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams
Controls Systems "Disaster" Recovery
It’s 3:00 am when you get the dreaded call: Disaster has struck your wastewater treatment plant. Every second counts, and your community is counting on you – but what are you counting on? We aren’t ones to gamble, but if we had to place a wager, we’re betting it’s Disaster Recovery Controls Systems.
Ransomware, Cyberattacks, Unplanned Outages – there’s no shortage of emergencies that can disrupt your water or wastewater treatment plant’s ability to produce clean, safe drinking water. Which is why it’s crucial to prepare your systems for the unexpected.
One of our primary goals as your trusted engineering partner is to equip you with the training and resources you need to run your SCADA & Controls systems with confidence. We do this through Controls Systems Training & Self-Sustainability. Additionally, we work with clients to develop Recovery Planning processes and procedures that map out how to safely restore SCADA & Controls systems, if and when a cyber incident or failure were to occur.
Controls Systems Construction Administration & Project Management
As part of our Construction & Administration service, we work with clients during the building phase to ensure all SCADA & Controls systems are installed and implemented in the way they were intended. Even if the design was engineered through a different firm, we act as the customer’s advocate, partnering with you to ensure your SCADA & Controls systems are designed, tested, installed and functioning as needed.
